From a very young age we are told that we need to have one multivitamin each day. Does anybody else remember those nasty tasting Flintstone vitamins that we were forced to eat before heading out to the bus in the morning?

Well, I do! And I wished I didn’t have to take them but my mom always told me they were good for me. But were they really? Nowadays, many people are questioning the effectiveness and even usefulness of multivitamins and claim that they’re a waste of money.

What are multivitamins?

Multivitamins are really anything that is in pill form and contains multiple different kinds of vitamins; hence the name “multivitamin”. There are actually many different kinds of multivitamins that can be used for different reasons.  Some of them claim to specialize in child development and assist in their growth and cognitive function. While others are geared more towards women, men, pregnant women, and even elderly people as well. They each contain different vitamins that the individual may not fully get in their everyday diet.

How do they work?

Multivitamins work in a lot of different ways. Obviously, they give you vitamins that you can also get from your foods. However, many people don’t actually get enough of their recommended vitamins each day and that’s where multivitamins come in. They give you a lot of vitamins that can be used to aid in your bodily functions. Many people use these every day so they don’t have to worry about getting enough vitamins in their diet – since today’s society doesn’t exactly eat the most nutritious food.

You Get Vitamins Through Your Food –  Many people who are health-conscious enough to supplement their diets with multivitamins are also just healthy in general. They probably eat well and in turn, get enough of the vitamins they need in their meals throughout the day.

It Enhances a Person’s Laziness – By just popping in a multivitamin in the morning, many people think that’s all they need in order to be a healthy individual. That means that they’re more likely to skip a workout and just be more lazy about their health routines in general.

Decreases the Healthy Foods You Eat – Just as it increases laziness physically in people, it also makes them lazy eaters. They think that because they’re pounding down multivitamins every day, they don’t need to be eating nutritious foods because they already got all the nutrients they need.

Your Body Normally Cannot Absorb All of Them – Have you ever heard that multivitamins are just expensive pee? People who say this do so because your body can only absorb a certain amount of vitamins in one sitting. So when you take a multivitamin, you really expel most of the vitamins in it.

They Won’t Magically Make You Healthy – Multivitamins are not a quick-fix to your health issues. Many people believe that by spending a lot of money and taking them every day, they will be healthy automatically. This is not true. They actually will only make your body do what it’s supposed to do.

Natural is Healthier – Getting your vitamins through your food and other natural sources is much better than taking a factory produced pill. As always, anything you put into your body is better if it’s in its natural form.

Can Contain Harmful Ingredients – Since these pills are produced in a factory facility, there are harmful ingredients in them. This is just a fact of how they are made in general. Chemicals are also needed in order to package all of those vitamins into just one pill or capsule.

FDA Doesn’t Approve all of Them – Although the FDA has to “inspect” multivitamins, they often don’t do so very thoroughly. The FDA is understaffed and underfunded. So not every item that passes through them is inspected to the upmost quality. Sometimes you may not know what you’re putting into your body.

Some Don’t Mix Well With Medications – There are some vitamins and minerals in multivitamins that can actually affect your medications. Vitamins have a way of disrupting your absorption of certain medications and even other vitamins as well.

Too Much is Just as Bad as Not Enough –  Getting too many vitamins can actually have adverse effects. Your body only needs so much of a vitamin in order for it to do its job. If you get too much, it can affect your body’s ability to function properly. Too much of one vitamin can actually inhibit the absorption of another and thus, causing you to be deficient in one vitamin.

How much do you really need?Are Multivitamins a Waste?

Based on your age, you may need different amounts of different vitamins. Many multivitamins actually cause you to intake too much and it can cause negative health issues. Here is how much you should be having of these certain vitamins depending on your age.

Calcium –  Women ages 19-50 should be having 1,000 mg per day and not exceed 2,500 mg per day.

Folic Acid –  Everybody should be getting 400 micrograms a day and should not exceed 1,000 micrograms.

Iron – Women aged 10-50 should get 18 mg per day and not go over 45 mg per day.

Magnesium – Women 19-30 should get 310 mg per day and women 30+ should get 320 mg per day and nobody should exceed 350 mg a day.

Vitamin A – Women should be getting 2,310 IU per day and never exceed 10,000 IU a day.

Vitamin C – Women need 75 mg per day and nobody should exceed 2,000 mg per day.

Vitamin D – You should be getting about 15 micrograms per day and should not go over 100 micrograms a day.

Zinc – Women only need 8 mg of this vitamin a day and should not go over 40 mg per day.

Multivitamins seem to have their uses, but there are also many factors that make them the wrong decision. These are just a few of the reasons why multivitamins can be a waste of money.
