A slow cooker is an ideal way to “slow” cook a full range of recipes of course there are pros and cons to consider when you are using a slow cooker. A few tips and tricks and a quick review of the pros and cons can help you to get more use out of your slow cooker.
Slow cookers are great when you have to be away from the kitchen for the day and you want to get a head start on a hot meal to come home to. Most people do not get all that they can out of their slow cooker because they do not use it enough.
The “slow” cooker is slow! You really have to plan ahead to be able to use your slow cooker. For example if you have a roast that you forget to put in 6 hours ago, there is no way to get it done in the next hour in the slow cooker. They are slow. Most meals take from 4-6 hours to cook which of course means that you are burning up quite a bit of energy during that time.
- Be sure to use enough liquid! No matter what you are cooking in the slow cooker you should be sure to use enough liquid. Not using enough liquid to cover everything in the pot can result is your food drying out.
- Make sure you use the right setting. If you plan on setting up the slow cooker than leaving it while you are gone for the day be sure to use the right setting most slow cookers have at least 3 different time settings. If you set it for too long than the food will dry out if you do not set it for long enough than the food will not cook.
- Get creative. There are so many recipes that you can use with your slow cooker. Most people only do things like stews or maybe some chicken but there are tons of recipes out there, don’t be afraid to try new things with your slow cooker.
- Use plenty of flavoring. The longer you cook something the more likely it is to lose flavor so don’t be afraid to add plenty of herbs and spices to your slow cooker meals.
